German Shepherd Puppy Obedience Instruction

Starting at a surprisingly young age, a German Shepherd puppy can master how to come, sit calmly, and walk at your side off the leash. Obedience lessons for your dog lets you to direct your pet verbally instead of by force. With obedience training, you will also be able to end your puppys undesirable behaviors like jumping and chewing. You can take your German Shepherd puppy to an obedience course in person or do it at home with a training DVD.

You may notice that these outcomes depend on you. Your behavior will drive the changes in your puppy’s behavior. Your pets natural disposition has a role too, but you are the key to successful training.

Before you start training your puppy, you need to learn the verbal commands. You must say the same phrase each time if you want consistent behavior. Your puppy will learn to respond to simple commands. Many trainers use puppy food to motivate their pet.

Besides using consistent commands, you must learn to correct inappropriate behavior. For young dogs, correction is done by repeating the command. Withholding the reward can be correction enough. Never be mean or loud when training a puppy in obedience.

This is what your German Shepherd will learn in obedience training. It is best to start training your dog as soon as it is weaned. These commands are appropriate for puppies between two and four months old.

“Focus” – Focus on the trainer
“Sit” – The puppys rear end is on the floor and it is watching you
“Stand” – Standing on four feet
“Stay” – Not moving until released verbally
“Down” – Belly on the ground and looking up
“Come” – Walk directly to you
“OK” – Ends the last command
“No” – Break off whatever the puppy was doing and pay attention

This is a lot to be taught so do not try to teach your puppy too many obedience skills at once. Teach your pup one or two commands at a time. Just master each command before trying to add more.

When your puppy responds appropriately to your commands, move on to the next level. These skills are not as intuitive to teach. You will have an easier time if you get guidance on how to train your pet on these commands.

* “Go” – Turn and go in direction that you indicate
* “Stop” – Halt
* “Off” – Get down from jumping
* “Back” – Back up a few steps
* “Heel” – Walk next to the trainers heel

These commands are useful for puppy potty training or crate training, or when you are correcting puppy nipping.

* “Potty” – Go potty now
* “Kennel up” – Time to go into its puppy crate and stay
* “Gentle” – Take an object from someone carefully, without touching them
* “No bite” – Stop biting or nipping
* “Drop” – Drop what is in its mouth
* “Leave it” – Ignore the item, person or animal that the dog is looking at

German Shepherd puppies love to learn. German Shepherds like to be kept busy and working, and they enjoy the attention you give them when training. You can continue beyond obedience training your dog. Your puppy can learn tricks like pretending to be dead, barking on command, and many more behaviors. If you focus on obedience training a puppy, your pet will like to spend time with you, and you will take pride in having a obedient pet.
