How to Use Pet Gates in Your Home

Dog gates are a crucial safety device to have in your house, whether you are bringing home a new puppy, have an older dog, or have a different new addition to your home. Dog gates can be a solution to issues like keeping your dog out of mischief by limiting its access to certain areas of the house that are much safer, contain less valuable objects, and don’t have escape routes to the street or other risky areas.

Pet gates are a much better solution than closing a door on your puppy and keeping it shut off in a room. With a gate, your dog won’t feel as isolated. You can still engage with your dog, see your dog and hear him. This could make a big difference in behavior and the relationship you have with your pet. It also permits you to create custom spaces for your pet. For example you can place a pet gate at the very top of a stairway and keep your pet to one floor of the house. This gives the pet plenty of room to move about, while permitting you to better supervise your pet and know where they are.

Spend some time carefully considering where to best place a gate, or gates. Think about what the room contains, and how your pet will feel with the room. Is the space freed from unsafe objects? Will your pet be comfortable here? Will it have everything it needs? Is there a possible means of escape for your pet, and will you be in a position to interact with it while its closed off? These are all vital things to be aware of prior to buying a gate.

Many pet gates are also transportable, meaning you can simply remove a gate and set it up somewhere else, changing where your dog is throughout the day, to fit your activities as they change. You may also get expandable gates and gate extensions for extra-wide areas and unique spaces. These are good for keeping pets out of the living room or dining room. You can often find gates to match the decor of your place. Pet gates are available in steel, plastic or wood and come in numerous sizes. In reality there aren’t many widths that aren’t available.

Before choosing a gate, be sure to locate the best areas of the house to put it. Then take careful measurements of the width and height you require. Remember, if you happen to have a puppydog it will grow swiftly and you must compensate by purchasing a gate that will accommodate the full size dog. Another thing be aware of is your pet’s strength. Never underestimate the power of a healthy dog. There are gates made to bear an impressive quantity of pressure but read product outlines carefully. Most will list the maximum size and weight of the dog it can accommodate.

After you select a gate and are prepared to install it, thoroughly read the directions. Once it is correctly installed, test the gate. Place important stress on the gate and confirm it doesn’t move. Ensure the gate has no pointed edges or anything that could offer a choking danger for your pet. Is your dog a chewer? Will the material of the gate face up to a determined, or teething dog? Ensure the slats aren’t far enough apart that the dog could get its head stuck between them.

Once you’ve made sure the gate is safe, enjoy the freedom of reassurance and don’t leave the dog untended for lengthy periods of time. Enjoy a new secure environment for you and your pet.
