Shih Tzu Grooming – What Prospective Owners Should Know About

The long-haired Shih Tzu, if you didn’t know, actually has two coats. There’s the outer coat, that is simply glorious to brush. It also has an inner coat, that’s usually wooly. So many people find this breed adorable that they decide to buy or adopt one, despite their lack of experience with raising it.

But a Shih Tzu needs to be groomed every single day; couple that with the breed’s demand for attention and some owner give up on it. Be informed though that this breed has a lifespan reaching about twenty year, and that’s a long time to keep grooming it, if you do it yourself. If you want to have a bouncing healthy Shih Tzu, you need to groom it, devotedly.

So don’t jump to a decision to own one just because you fell in love with this breed after seeing it on a dog show, online video clip, or combed the hair of a friend’s Shih Tzu. There are conformation standards, strict ones, that dog show entrants must pass. Because their owner trained them hard and groomed them well, those dogs behave so well and look so good. Shih Tzu grooming is a not an everyday habit anyone can get into.

It’s not news to anyone that some people purchase or adopt this breed, and then, after experiencing first hand just how demanding it is to keep one, they give up – they give it up for adoption. It’s probably a difference in temperaments – the bonding session grooming this pet can provide an owner is seen by others as a demand they can’t put up with. Grooming their beloved Shih Tzu is an activity some people love. They’re great pets, especially for the elderly, since they are made to feel wanted because the dogs crave to be loved.

If for some reason, grooming a dog of this breed maybe too much, but that you love it too much, you can as a last resort, consult a dog hairstylist. You could have your Shih Tzu’s hair cut stylishly, so that your dog remains cute, only with less hair to worry about grooming. You wan to avoid the worst case scenario, and that means having your dog adopted.

Again, if Shih Tzu grooming is an everyday habit you cannot establish and stick to, please reconsider getting a Shih Tzu. Irregular grooming only creates problems for the dog, inconveniencing it at the least, and posing health worries at worst. The last thing you want is for you Shih Tzu’s hair to mat, tangle up, be the home to various parasites that lead to skin lesions and other diseases.
