Varieties Of Poodle Dogs

Standard Poodles

When most people hear the word poodles, they think of tiny dogs, but standard poodle puppies can grow to be quite large. According to the standards of the American Kennel Club (AKC), the poodle dogs of the standard type should measure at least fifteen inches in the height of their shoulder, but many of them stand twenty inches or taller.

Standard poodles are lovely dogs. Like other types of poodle, they are intelligent, friendly, proud, and fiercely loyal. Standard poodles, however, carry a heavy genetic burden. Their average life span is around twelve years, several years shorter than the smaller Poodle types. Veterinarian statistics show that around 40% of the poodle dogs of the standard type develop different varieties of cancers that lead to their deaths.

Standard poodles also run high chance of being born with Addison’s disease, a hormonal disorder which, if untreated, can lead to cardiac arrest and death. And the risks don’t stop here, the standard poodles beeing prone to developing hip dysplasia, as all the large size breeds of dogs.

Miniature Poodles

In accordance to the American Kennel Club standards, the miniature poddle dogs measure between ten and fifteen inches at their shoulder.

The poodles of this type fit well for apartment dwellers. They use to bark at strangers, making good watchdogs.

Like other poodles, miniature poodles tend to get along well with all ages of humans and with other pets. These poodles live around fifteen years. Genetic problems that plague them include problems with the knees, a disease of the eyes which can lead to blindness, and epilepsy (seizure disorder).

Toy Poodles

The poodles of this type stand up to ten inches at their shoulder. There are even smaller varieties, such as the so called tea cup poodle. The toy poodles have a life span of around eighteen years, the longest of all Poodle types.

Poodle Coats

The dogs of the poodle breed can present two types of coats. The most common show poodles have curly coats.

Another type of coat is the corded one. Not many poodles having corded coats are known in the United States.

The Most Common Colors For Poodles

The most common colors for poodles are black or white, but poodles exist in almost any color you can imagine including brown, the Apricot Poodle, silver, beige, cream, blue, and even a Red Poodle. For the show dogs, only uniform colors are admitted.
