A heavy dog crashing into you at speed can cause crush injuries and broken bones, even when you are unhurt by the actual crash. The dog could also be injured seriously if a crash were to occur. Dogs can suffer broken legs from being thrown against car seats, or eye injuries caused by broken glass. A dog can suffer broken ribs or can be crushed if an airbag opens.

The best way to restrain a dog in a car is by using a good quality, well-fitting harness attached to a regular seat belt. This takes care of your dog in the same way humans are taken care of when they travel in a car. The dog is adequately restrained within the car; if the car crashes, the dog will stay safer. If you cannot secure your dog with a harness, a secured crate is also good, but not as good as a harness. If the crate is too big, your dog can be injured crashing against the sides in a crash. And it is difficult to secure a medium-sized crate to the car in order to prevent it moving around in an accident. A poorly secured crate could cause injury to human passengers, too.

The exact number of accidents caused by the actions of unrestrained dogs — and their distracted owners — is unknown, but many thousands occur every year. The good news is these accidents are preventable, and it never hurts to take extra precautions when traveling with Fido. Even common things like dogs hanging their heads out the windows of cars, or left in cars on warm days, are hazards that you can keep from hurting your dog with proper restraint.
